The world of football witnessed a strange incident in Russia, after the Russian club Sochi decided to dismiss Spanish coach Robert Moreno, after a short period he spent coaching the team, amid accusations that he relied excessively on artificial intelligence (ChatGPT) in managing many aspects of technical work within the club.

According to what Andrei Orolov, the club’s former sporting director, revealed, Moreno used the ChatGPT program to plan training programs, prepare the team’s travel schedule, and even select players, decisions that displeased the players and technical staff within the Russian team.
One of the most prominent positions that sparked controversy, according to reports, is that the system adopted by the Spanish coach suggested that the players remain awake for 28 continuous hours as part of a training program before a match in the city of Khabarovsk, which angered the players and the club management, while many described this plan as illogical and does not take into account the physical and psychological aspects of the players.
ChatGPT is also attributed, according to the analysis, to have been used by Moreno to evaluate alternatives to strikers, as it was reported that one of the strikers chosen based on artificial intelligence recommendations did not meet expectations on the field, which increased the crisis within the club.
In the end, Sochi terminated Moreno’s contract last September after a period in which he did not achieve positive results, as the team was suffering from a clear decline in results, amid accusations that excessive reliance on “ChatGPT” was one of the factors that affected the team’s balance within the changing room and the level of technical performance.
Although Moreno denied in later statements that he used ChatGPT to make technical decisions, stressing that he only used it for simple purposes such as translation between languages, this did not change the reality of his previous decision in Sochi.
