revealed International Sports Court (CAS) on the merits of the final ruling in the case filed by the Pyramids Club against the decision not to deduct three points from Al-Ahly Club after not playing the summit match during the 2024-2025 season, confirming the validity of the decision issued by the Egyptian Clubs Association and rejecting the submitted appeal.

CAS publishes the rationale for its final ruling in the Pyramids and Zamalek dispute

In this case, Pyramids disputed Al-Ahly, the Club Association, the Football Association, and Zamalek Club, which announced its solidarity with Pyramids, while the Football Association officials considered themselves a passive party and did not send any pleading.

Pyramids: Al-Ahly’s absence from the Zamalek match was a voluntary decision that was previously announced and not a force majeure

Pyramids confirmed that the deduction of the three additional points represents a mandatory and cumulative penalty, and the association does not have the discretion to amend it once the withdrawal is proven, based on Article 17 (8) of the Competitions Regulations, which stipulates the obligation of the penalty.

The club stressed that Al-Ahly’s absence from the match was a voluntary and previously announced decision, which takes the incident out of the scope of “force majeure” or emergency circumstances, considering that the association tried to find a non-existent legal justification to justify its decision to grant clemency.

Pyramids pointed out that the association’s decisions are not immune from appeal before the Egyptian Federation’s Appeals Committee, considering that Article 63, which grants the association absolute sovereignty, is “legally flawed,” and violates the principles of international sports law that grant the injured party the right to litigation.

The club also cited the incident of Zamalek’s withdrawal in 2024, where the punishment was strictly applied, which reflects double standards and favoritism that affected the competition for the league title, and harmed the sporting and financial interests of Pyramids.

Club Association: Pyramids had to appeal directly within the legal deadline

The Association defended itself by claiming lack of standing, pointing out that the contested decision was issued by the Appeals Committee of the Egyptian Federation and not by it, and that Pyramids erred in directing the dispute, and it should have directly appealed the Association’s decision within the legal deadline.

At the core of its defense, the Association adhered to its discretionary sovereignty in accordance with Article 63 of the regulations, considering that the Board of Directors alone has the authority to interpret the texts and deal with emergency situations.

The Association confirmed that amending the penalty came after an objective evaluation, taking into account the failure of the Football Association to provide foreign referees despite Al-Ahly’s early request, and decided to be satisfied with the material penalty and a 3-0 technical defeat, while canceling the deduction of additional points to achieve a balance between the provisions of the law and the spirit of competition.

The association also defended the absence of Pyramids’ direct interest at the time the decision was issued, and explained that the final league results would have determined the champion in the remaining matches.

Al-Ahly: Our position was not a disciplinary withdrawal.. and Pyramids are a third party that does not have the right to intervene

Al-Ahly confirmed that its position was not a disciplinary withdrawal, but rather an adherence to a legitimate right stipulated in the regulations to request foreign referees, and that the association officially approved the request, which makes its decision to cancel the cumulative penalty correct and fair.

Al-Ahly also argued that Pyramids had no interest in the appeal, considering that it was a third party that had no right to interfere in the penalties directed at another club.

Al-Ahly pointed out that competing in the table does not give clubs the right of legal guardianship over their opponents, and that any interference in administrative decisions that do not affect their direct rights threatens the stability of the competition.

Zamalek supports Pyramids

Zamalek’s plea was fully supportive of Pyramids’ position, considering that the association’s silence regarding applying the full penalty to Al-Ahly represents a violation of the principle of equality in sports law.

Zamalek stressed that Article 17 is the governing text in cases of non-attendance at matches, and that using Article 63 to justify reducing the penalty represents an illegitimate expansion that empties disciplinary penalties of their deterrent content.

Zamalek demanded to cancel the Appeals Committee’s decision and return to implementing the Competitions Committee’s original decision, stressing the importance of protecting the integrity of the competition and not allowing the creation of precedents for major clubs to avoid bearing the consequences of withdrawals.

Decision of the International Court of Sport “CAS”

At the conclusion of the arguments, Cass confirmed the validity of the association’s decision, and rejected the appeal formally and substantively, emphasizing respect for the independence of national sports bodies and the legitimacy of amending the penalty in accordance with local and international regulations. It considered that all parties had obtained their full right to defense, and the ruling had become final and binding, which ends the legal controversy and confirms the stability of the competition for the league title last season, which Al-Ahly Club won by 3 points over Pyramids.
