Harran University in Sanliurfa state, southeastern Turkey, has prepared a project to manufacture a substance extracted from the thin shell of pistachios and pistachio tree gum, for the purpose of using it in the pharmaceutical sector and the cosmetics industry.
Can pistachio shells be used to manufacture medicines and cosmetics?
According to what was published by Anatolia News Agency, Eyup Karaogul, a faculty member in the University’s Food Engineering Department, said that their research has proven that pistachio shells contain anti-cancer substances, and he pointed outKaraoglu pointed out that the pistachio shell is not exploited in any field, and is thrown away by food companies.
He added that pistachio and pistachio cultivation flourishes in the state of Sanliurfa, and he explained that they had prepared a project to extract gum from the pistachio tree, then separate the gum from the volatile oil contained in the extracted substance, and use it in cosmetics and cancer treatment. He explained that this product is used in food preservatives and the cosmetics sector.
