The Ezbet Gebaili area, in the eastern neighborhood of Fayoum City, in Fayoum Governorate, is witnessing a state of anger and dissatisfaction among the residents, after the garbage crisis worsened in an unprecedented manner, and one of the streets facing the insurance building turned into what resembles “random sorting camps” for garbage, in light of the complete absence of oversight from the executive agencies in the eastern neighborhood.
An environmental disaster in the East Fayoum neighborhood.. “scavengers” turn Ezbet Gebaili into a garbage hotspot, amid neighborhood officials’ neglect
A number of residents said, in exclusive statements, to Cairo 24 that the area had become a hotbed for what they described as “scavengers,” who set up primitive tents inside the street and began collecting and sorting garbage on a daily basis, which led to the spread of unpleasant odors and insects, as well as distorting the cultural appearance of the area.
One of the residents added: “The situation has gotten out of control. Garbage is everywhere, and scavengers continue to live among us as if the street belongs to them, and there is no intervention from the neighborhood despite repeated complaints.”
Another indicated that residents submitted several official complaints to Sharq neighborhood officials, without any significant response, stressing that the crisis was no longer limited to the accumulation of garbage only, but had extended to constitute an environmental and health threat, especially to children and the elderly.
Residents stressed that the continuation of this situation raises fears of the spread of diseases, in the absence of regular cleaning campaigns or deterrent measures against those responsible for this disaster, demanding that officials quickly intervene and develop a radical solution to the crisis.
The residents of the area appealed to Dr. Mohamed Hani Ghoneim, Governor of Fayoum, to launch intensive campaigns to remove occupations and encroachments, and to confront the phenomenon of sorting garbage in the streets, in order to preserve public health and the dignity of citizens, stressing that the continued neglect of Sharq neighborhood officials increases the suffering of the people day after day.
