Officials of the handball sector at Al-Ahly Club are studying the possibility of participating in a tournament UEFA Champions LeagueFollowing the amendments made by the European Union to the competition, the possibility of two teams from outside the Old Continent participating in the tournament.

A source told Cairo 24 reveals Al-Ahly management’s position on the handball team’s participation in the Champions League

A source told Cairo 24 that Al-Ahly management is studying the proposal internally before deciding on whether or not to approach the European Handball Federation to participate in the competitions of the new version of the European Champions League.

The source added, “There are many factors that govern Al-Ahly’s participation in a tournament the size of the Champions League, including financial factors and transportation costs to and from the teams participating in the group, in addition to the team’s preparations at the technical level, all of which need to be carefully studied before participating or being approached to participate.”

Earlier, the Executive Committee of the European Handball Federation announced the system for distributing teams in the Champions League and the European Men’s League for the new season 2026/27, at its meeting held in Rotterdam on Saturday, December 13, paving the way for a new era for European clubs and perhaps beyond.

The tournament is witnessing a significant expansion, bringing the number of teams to 24, in a step aimed at increasing competitiveness and expanding the presence of European handball in new markets, while allowing the participation of two teams from outside the European continent, which may allow Al-Ahly or Zamalek the opportunity to be present in continental competitions.
