Sony confirmed, through statements by lead PlayStation systems engineer Mark Cerny, that it is working in cooperation with AMD to develop frame generation technology using artificial intelligence, with the aim of improving frame rates without the need to rely on more powerful hardware.

These efforts are part of Project Amethyst, a machine learning-based graphics processing system optimized specifically for PlayStation. This technology is also based on AMD’s new FSR Redstone package, which not only increases resolution, but also includes frame generation and ray tracing reconstruction.

Interestingly, the current PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology actually shares some foundations with FSR Redstone, meaning that the new development is an extension and improvement of what already exists, rather than a complete move from scratch.

However, Mark Cerny explained that this feature will not arrive soon, and it is not expected to be launched during the current year, but its first features are likely to appear during the next year as work on it continues.
