Google is testing the extension of Chrome’s delayed content loading feature to include video and audio elements, with the aim of improving page loading speed and user experience.

This technology relies on loading heavy elements on the page gradually, so that loading unnecessary media is postponed until the user approaches it while browsing, which allows interaction with the essential content faster.

Chrome and Chromium-based browsers have previously supported this feature for images and iframes since 2019, where they only load when you hover near them.

Now, Google is seeking to expand the scope of the feature to include video and audio elements within web pages, although they are less widespread compared to images, but they remain important in many uses.

This feature is expected to reach Chrome version 148 on computers and phones, and is likely to later extend to other Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge.
