The famous Apple TV is celebrating the nineteenth anniversary of its first launch in the market, amid growing rumors about Apple’s willingness to announce a new model soon. The company’s late CEO, Steve Jobs, revealed this innovative device for the first time during the Macworld Expo conference in January 2007, along with the first iPhone, but it was not officially released to users until March of the same year, opening a new door to the world of home entertainment.

This pioneering device initially bore the name iTV during the early stages of presentation, before it was changed later. The new innovation allowed users to wirelessly stream movies, TV shows, music, and photos from their Mac or PC directly to their TV screens. Unlike what we see today, the device did not have an App Store or support for third-party applications, as the entire experience centered around synced media or purchased directly from the iTunes digital store.

Users relied on a simple remote control to operate a specially designed interface for browsing music and video libraries on the TV screen. The first version included a 40 GB hard disk to store content locally, with support for a high-definition 720p display resolution, and HDMI ports. It was put on the market at a price of $299. The company described this project in its beginnings as just a hobby to reflect its experimental status, before redirecting it over the years to become an independent broadcast device.

The year 2010 witnessed a turning point when Apple abandoned the internal hard drive and moved to a smaller design that focused primarily on live streaming. The introduction of the tvOS operating system and the App Store in 2015 represented a qualitative shift that allowed applications and games to run. Apple later added support for 4K ultra-resolution in 2017 and continues to develop faster chipsets, arriving at the current model that relies on the powerful A15 Bionic chip to provide smooth and fast performance that meets the aspirations of modern users.

Today, the device has turned into an integrated center for the company’s various services, such as Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, AirPlay, and HomeKit, going beyond its original idea. Although competing devices from companies such as Roku, Amazon, and Google dominate the economic category, Apple continues to present its device as a luxury option that integrates strongly with its ecosystem, while technology enthusiasts await the soon announcement of a new generation that includes a faster processing chip and the N1 wireless chip dedicated to improving Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.
