Compal has introduced a lot of laptop concepts in previous years, and 2026 will be no different. Compal’s latest concept, called the AI Book, combines an E Ink touchscreen with a traditional laptop keyboard.
Compal has introduced many interesting laptop concepts in the past, such as the modular Adapt Although these are just concepts, they are still very interesting to look at, and may be turned into reality at a future date.
One of the company’s latest concepts happens to be the Compal AI Book computer. Contrary to what the name suggests, the most interesting aspect of the laptop has nothing to do with artificial intelligence, but rather the way it uses the palm rest area. Unlike most laptops that simply feature a trackpad, Compal decided to provide the palm rest area of the AIBook with a full e-ink screen.
What’s even more interesting is that the laptop’s E-Ink palm rest will extend beyond the laptop’s screen when it’s in clamshell mode, allowing users to quickly glance at their notifications, notes, to-do lists, and more. As Liliputing points out, since e-ink displays never need to be refreshed, static content can be retained even when the laptop is turned off.
The e-ink display will feature touch and pen support, allowing it to essentially become a digital notepad when necessary. It also features a hinge, and can be flipped out when the laptop is closed, to act as a kind of tablet.
Readers who are curious about the AIBook brand should be happy to know that there is no gratuitous use of artificial intelligence. Compal states that the AI branding was added because the laptop can display AI content, which is completely ridiculous since it can be done on literally any screen.
Of course, since it’s a concept-based product, we don’t have any exact system specifications. We also have no idea when this concept will become a reality, if it ever happens at all. However, the idea certainly seems to have its merits, and might be welcomed by people who can find a use for it.
