Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Abroad Affairs, met on Tuesday, December 9, with Mr. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

At the beginning of the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation for the pivotal role played by FAO in efforts to eradicate hunger by 2030, praising the extended strategic partnership between Egypt and the organization.

Minister Abdel Aty also renewed Egypt’s keenness to host a global center for storing, supplying and trading grains in a way that ensures enhancing food security and related supply chains, reviewing the capabilities that Egypt possesses, whether in terms of geographical location or logistical infrastructure, pointing to the ongoing technical cooperation between the organization and national authorities to complete the feasibility study for the project.

Minister Abdel-Ati also reviewed the Egyptian state’s efforts to achieve food security within “Egypt Vision 2030,” and the initiatives it includes to improve the standard of living and reduce hunger rates among the neediest groups, as well as updating the strategy and action plan for sustainable agricultural development, the National Food Strategy, and the “Decent Life” initiative.

The Foreign Minister also stressed Egypt’s interest in actively participating in regional and international efforts to support food security and nutrition, and all activities organized by the organization.

On the other hand, the Minister of Foreign Affairs discussed the existing cooperation between the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development and the FAO, which was launched through a memorandum of understanding signed in January 2024, which aims to support sustainable development in African countries, especially in the areas of transforming agricultural systems and enhancing the resilience of food chains to ensure achieving food security.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also stressed the great importance that Egypt attaches to enhancing cooperation between South-South countries and tripartite cooperation as a main mechanism to support developing countries, noting Egypt’s commitment to contributing to global efforts to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan, especially in light of the worsening repercussions.
